Window Companies Should Be Able to Show You These 3 Things

So it’s time to think about replacing your windows. Maybe you’re overdue for an upgrade and sitting on a nice tax return. Maybe you’re sick of peering out through warped glass from the 1990s and looking to raise your home value. Perhaps you noticed a hairline crack and there’s no avoiding a window replacement. Whatever the reason, you’ve begun to look at window companies and realized something… there are hundreds to choose from! So what are the three things that you deserve to know from window companies before you hire one?

There are three key things window companies should have no problem providing you as a prospective consumer. The first is a record of which professional associations and preferred contractor databases they are listed with. Some examples include the Better Business Bureau and Home Advisor Pro. Secondly, your contractor should be able to show you a healthy list of positive customer reviews on Google or otherwise. Lastly, when making sure your contractor is legitimate and customer-focused, the icing on the cake is finding evidence of recent, meaningful online engagement. Social media can be a great tool for quickly discovering the legitimacy of a window repair or replacement company.

Is Your Window Company a Preferred Contractor?

Which associations endorse and support the work of the contractor you’re considering? Home Advisor Pro, Angie’s List, and others like them will give you a good idea of the quality of work a window company does. Beware of companies that are not listed anywhere. This can mean they have less than extensive experience, little in the way of good reviews, or even no legitimate training at all.

We’ve been focusing primarily on residential window replacement projects. But if yours happens to be a commercial job, there are resources and reports you can check too. The Retail Contractors Association is a great place to start, but make sure that any company you consider is endorsed by at least one reputable third party group.

Pro Tip: There aren’t a whole lot of companies in Columbus that do window work exclusively. Most will do a combination of windows, roofing, siding… In short, they’ll do exterior work.

In the event that you don’t see a company listed with a bunch of the bigger, more general contractor databases, be sure to check and see if they’re listed with a more specific contractor list.

By way of example, the Owens Corning preferred contractor list shows the contractors that Owens Corning has given their stamp of approval for roofing jobs. If your contractor is listed on a resource like this and not on something broader too, it may just be that they specialize more in one specific area. Ideally, however, you will find your window company is listed in more than a few reputable trade lists.

How Are Their Customer Reviews?

As any true foodie knows, the truth usually spills from the mouths of past customers. Customer reviews can reveal a LOT about a business, and there are plenty of places to find them. Google Reviews are the biggest name in the game by far. But reviews from places like Yellowpages may also be worth checking.

Similarly, sites like the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List overlap in purpose a bit. These provide both official in-depth reviews as well as customer ratings. It’s always worth checking out what they have to say to get the bigger picture on any window companies you’re considering hiring.

Are They Active and Engaged on Social?

This isn’t the be-all-end-all, but it’s a great sign when window companies are active on Facebook, Instagram, or other social media outlets. It goes a long way toward showing that, yes, this is a legitimate company doing real things. But it may also give you a more candid look at some of their handiwork, demeanor toward clients, and the overall reactions of their immediate community.

Do They Have That “X-Factor?”

I know, I know… you aren’t asking your window guys to belt it out like Bruno Mars while replacing your living room fixtures. But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve something special. When choosing a window replacement company in Columbus, you have options. So it’s our opinion that companies shouldn’t take your business for granted.
